Firefighter: after “tagline”, what about “What has changed is almost everything around that core”?

The trade that runs toward what everyone else flees — from Rome's vigiles and Edo's matoi bearers to today's wildfire crews and 24-hour rescue shifts. Firefighting is one of the few trades whose core act has not changed in two thousand years: when a structure burns, human beings still have to go toward it, get water or tools between the fire and everything else, and bring out anyone trapped inside.

Firefighter · This page follows the trade from Crassus's cynical private briga

This page follows the trade from Crassus's cynical private brigade and Augustus's vigiles through London's insurance brigades, James Braidwood's Edinburgh professionals and Edo's matoi bearers, to smokejumpers, Chernobyl and the 343 FDNY members lost on 11 September 2001.

Firefighter · How long does it take to become a firefighter?

From first application to riding a truck, usually one to two years in career systems. The hiring pipeline — written exam, physical test, interviews, background and medical checks — often takes longer than the training itself. Fire academies run roughly three to eight months in the US and Japan, while Germany's Brandmeister training lasts about eighteen months; nearly everywhere a probationary year follows.
