Post-Stroke: after “Over-reliance on the unaffected side”, what about “Skipping secondary prevention measures”?

Habitually compensating with the unaffected limb for all tasks is generally discouraged when appropriate, since it can limit relearning and recovery on the affected side, within the bounds of safety. Dismissing new weakness, speech changes, or facial drooping as unrelated to the original stroke is discouraged, since these can indicate a new or recurrent event requiring emergency care. (21)

Neglecting blood pressure control, prescribed medications, or other secondary prevention measures is generally discouraged, since these substantially reduce the risk of a second stroke. Extended positioning of the affected limb without movement is generally discouraged, since it can contribute to stiffness, spasticity, and secondary joint problems.

Post-Stroke · Over-reliance on the unaffected side

Habitually compensating with the unaffected limb for all tasks is generally discouraged when appropriate, since it can limit relearning and recovery on the affected side, within the bounds of safety. Dismissing new weakness, speech changes, or facial drooping as unrelated to the original stroke is discouraged, since these can indicate a new or recurrent event requiring emergency care.

Post-Stroke · Skipping secondary prevention measures

Neglecting blood pressure control, prescribed medications, or other secondary prevention measures is generally discouraged, since these substantially reduce the risk of a second stroke. Extended positioning of the affected limb without movement is generally discouraged, since it can contribute to stiffness, spasticity, and secondary joint problems.

Post-Stroke · New neurological symptoms

Any new weakness, speech difficulty, facial drooping, or severe headache during rehabilitation warrants immediately stopping activity and seeking emergency care. Post-stroke rehabilitation is generally organized into broad phases spanning acute hospital care, intensive early rehabilitation, and longer-term community-based practice, with the most rapid gains typically occurring in the first several months.

Post-Stroke · Because stroke severity and recovery trajectories vary enormousl

Because stroke severity and recovery trajectories vary enormously between individuals, these phases represent a general framework rather than a fixed timeline that applies uniformly to everyone.

This is education from the atlas. It does not diagnose and does not prescribe a dose. It does not replace the full topic page.

What is the next question after this?

Any new weakness, speech difficulty, facial drooping, or severe headache during rehabilitation warrants immediately stopping activity and seeking emergency care. Post-stroke rehabilitation is generally organized into broad phases spanning acute hospital care, intensive early rehabilitation, and longer-term community-based practice, with the most rapid gains typically occurring in the first several months.

Where is the longer entry?

Because stroke severity and recovery trajectories vary enormously between individuals, these phases represent a general framework rather than a fixed timeline that applies uniformly to everyone.
