How it unfolded

Magic Johnson's Michigan State beat Larry Bird's Indiana State 75-64. Indiana State had gone 33-0 coming into the game, and Bird, averaging over 28 points that season, had already been named national player of the year. Michigan State coach Jud Heathcote built a match-up zone aimed squarely at Bird — the instant the ball moved toward him, two or more defenders converged while the rest cut off passing lanes. Bird made just 7 of 21 field-goal attempts, finishing with 19 points and several turnovers. Magic Johnson scored 24 points and grabbed 7 rebounds, and Greg Kelser added 19. Michigan State built a double-digit lead in the first half and managed the margin the rest of the way. The real record set that night was off the court: a Nielsen rating of 24.1 and a 38 share, the highest of any college basketball game ever played and still unmatched.

Why it still matters

This is the starting point of the rivalry that saved the NBA. The two players entered the league together that fall and met three times in the Finals through the 1980s, reviving the Lakers-Celtics axis and driving the league's commercial turnaround. It also proved to broadcasters that March Madness could become a national cultural event — the value of today's NCAA tournament broadcast rights traces back to this single night.
