How it unfolded

Two years earlier, Schmeling had been the undefeated prospect who beat Joe Louis in 12 rounds, handing him the only prime-years loss of his career. In the interim Louis had become champion, but he himself said he wasn't a real champion until he beat Schmeling. With Nazi Germany holding Schmeling up as a symbol of the regime and Louis received at the White House, the rematch became an event beyond sport. Seventy thousand filled Yankee Stadium, gate receipts topped a million dollars, and radio carried the fight worldwide in multiple languages. The fight ended in 2 minutes and 4 seconds. Louis pressed forward from the opening bell, pinning Schmeling to the ropes with combinations left and right, and a right hand to the body injured his spine. Schmeling went down three times, his corner threw in the towel, and referee Arthur Donovan stopped the fight. Schmeling was carried out on a stretcher and hospitalized for weeks.

Why it still matters

With this win Louis became the first nationwide Black American hero. He reopened the door closed since Johnson, and it validated a heavyweight reign that would run 11 years and 8 months across 25 defenses, still the record. It also stands as one of the 20th century's defining examples of what happens when sport is turned into national propaganda.
