Impact 91

  • Turned Olympic gold into a documented seven-figure touring contract
  • Set the Ice Capades template later champions chased
  • Proved a female winter Olympian could out-earn most summer pros of the era

Hamill's Capades deal showed networks and promoters that a figure skater's post-Olympic face could sell arenas eight times a week. Every later Stars on Ice and Champions on Ice business model sits on that proof that skating's real payroll was entertainment, not ISU prize money.

Hamill left amateur skating with Olympic, World and US titles already secured, then signed the Ice Capades deal contemporary reports put at a million dollars a year — money no competition purse of the 1970s could approach. Restated in 2024 dollars it remains a landmark winter-sports payday, less because of absolute size than because it established touring ice as figure skating's commercial centre of gravity for the next two decades.
