Track & Field: after “A championship is not one contest but dozens running in parallel”, what about “The track and the running events”?

A championship is not one contest but dozens running in parallel over about nine days, each discipline a self-contained competition with its own rounds. Track events progress from heats through semi-finals to a final, thinning the field at each stage. Field events hold a qualifying round to select finalists, who then compete for the medals.

Championship athletics is contested on a 400m synthetic oval, run anticlockwise, with 8 or 9 lanes each 1.22m wide. Sprints up to 400m and the hurdles are run entirely in lanes; the 800m starts in lanes before runners break for the inside; distance races start from a curved line and run in a pack. The 100m is run on the finishing straight, longer races around the bends.

Track & Field · Starting: blocks, 'set' and the gun

Sprinters and hurdlers start from fixed starting blocks in a crouch. On 'on your marks' they settle into the blocks; on 'set' they raise their hips to the ready position and freeze; then the gun fires. Sensors in the blocks measure reaction time, and any push before the gun — or a reaction under 0.100 seconds, deemed humanly impossible — is a false start.

Track & Field · Hurdles and the steeplechase

Hurdle races add ten evenly spaced barriers to a sprint: 110m hurdles (1.067m high) for men, 100m (0.838m) for women, and the 400m hurdles at lower height for both. Hurdles are designed to tip over if struck, and knocking them down is not itself a penalty, though it costs time; running out of your lane or trailing a leg outside the hurdle is illegal.
