How it unfolded

The matchup between undefeated (26-0) champion Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor, returning to MMA after two years away, became the biggest box-office event in UFC history, fueled by heated exchanges at the weigh-ins and press conferences and compounded by McGregor's bus attack on Khabib's team the previous year. The fight went exactly to Khabib's plan. He took McGregor down and pinned him against the cage in round one, then dropped him with a clean right hand on the feet in round two. McGregor fired back with several landed uppercuts in round three, but was dragged back to the mat in round four and tapped to a neck crank at 3:03. Immediately after the win, Khabib climbed the cage and charged at McGregor's corner, while inside the cage, several of Khabib's teammates attacked McGregor. The Nevada State Athletic Commission suspended Khabib for nine months and McGregor for six. The event sold roughly 2.4 million pay-per-view buys, still the UFC record.

Why it still matters

This fight set both a sporting and a commercial record on the same night. It became a textbook example of how wrestling-based pressure can neutralize an elite striker and marked the starting point of the Dagestani school's dominance at lightweight. At the same time, the brawl outside the cage left a lasting debate about how far a promotion should let personal animosity be stoked for business.
