Impact 88
- Proved a footballer could headline an American entertainment product
- Pulled global press into the NASL's short boom
- Set the template for later Designated Player marketing in MLS
Pelé's Cosmos years did not make the NASL permanent, but they taught US promoters that football needed a face, not just a fixture list. The Designated Player rule MLS later used for Beckham and Messi is a direct descendant of that experiment: pay one global name enough to carry the brand, then sell the rest of the roster around him.
By 1975 Pelé had already won three World Cups with Brazil. The Cosmos cheque mattered because it was denominated in the entertainment economy of New York, not only in Brazilian club wages. Restated in 2024 dollars, the package sits far below modern PSG totals — and still higher than almost any teammate he ever had — which is exactly why it rewired what 'marketable footballer' meant outside Europe.
