How it unfolded
Argentina beat the United States 89-81 to reach the Olympic final. It was only the third Olympic loss for a US team of active NBA players since 1992 — and all three had come at this single tournament, following group-stage losses to Puerto Rico and Lithuania. Manu Ginóbili scored 29 points to lead the way, with Andrés Nocioni and Luis Scola handling the interior. Argentina's strength wasn't individual talent but cohesion — most of the so-called "Golden Generation" had played together since their teens, and their constant ball movement and backdoor cuts repeatedly unsettled the US's man-to-man defense. The US shot poorly from outside and never found a coherent half-court answer. Argentina beat Italy 84-69 the next day to secure gold, while the US settled for bronze after beating Lithuania.
Why it still matters
This is the game that changed American basketball's self-image. In its aftermath, USA Basketball was reorganised under Jerry Colangelo, introducing three-year player commitments, a standing national team and training for international rules — a process that produced the 2008 "Redeem Team." At the same time, the match proved that European and South American-style team basketball could close a talent gap with cohesion, changing how the NBA scouted and signed international players for the next two decades.
