How it unfolded

This was the first time all four belts had been on the line in a single heavyweight fight. WBA/IBF/WBO champion Usyk was undefeated at 22-0; WBC champion Fury was 34-0-1. Fury, with a clear size advantage, dictated the fight's rhythm in the early rounds, and through the midpoint many scored him ahead as he leaned his shoulder into Usyk to push him around. The flow shifted from the eighth round. Usyk's left hand began landing repeatedly, and in the ninth a combination drove Fury to the ropes and buckled his legs; the referee administered a standing count, and Fury barely survived the round when the bell rang. Usyk took the final three rounds, and the scorecards split 115-112 and 114-113 for Usyk against 114-113 for Fury. Usyk became the first undisputed heavyweight champion of the four-belt era, and the first man to hold every heavyweight title since Lennox Lewis in 1999.

Why it still matters

This was the moment a heavyweight division fractured for decades finally had one champion again. It was also the fight that confirmed Saudi capital as a new promotional force capable of making matchups long stuck in gridlock. Having already gone undisputed at cruiserweight, Usyk became one of the very few fighters ever to hold all four belts in two different weight classes.
