Endorsements. Puma, Audi, MRF and dozens of other partners; his personal brand was independently valued near $228m in 2023.

Impact 97

  • Held cricket's highest annual earnings for the better part of a decade
  • Was independently valued as India's single most valuable celebrity brand
  • Remained the only cricketer on several global highest-paid-athlete lists

Kohli's sustained run atop cricket's earnings tables, even as IPL auction prices for other players climbed past his own franchise salary, showed that endorsement value and auction value were now two separate currencies in the sport. His continued presence on global celebrity-brand rankings alongside film stars, not just other athletes, marked a new commercial tier cricket had not reached before him.

By the mid-2020s Kohli's reported $33 million a year came overwhelmingly from endorsements — Puma, Audi, MRF and dozens more — rather than his BCCI contract or IPL salary, which by then were dwarfed by the auction prices being paid for younger players. Independent brand-valuation firms put his personal commercial worth near $228 million in 2023, making him, by a wide margin, the only cricketer whose earnings routinely appeared in the same conversation as global football and basketball stars.
