Bristow & pub-TV fame 1980–1989
BBC audiences and exhibition circuits made the first darts household names.
Eric Bristow's Crafty Cockney persona sold out halls while World Championship purses were still modest. The real living came from exhibitions, challenges and early TV exposure — a template the PDC later industrialised rather than invented.
Taylor's PDC machine 1994–2012
Phil Taylor and Sky Sports turned darts into a weekly television business.
The PDC breakaway concentrated the best players under Barry Hearn's promotion. Taylor's pile of world titles coincided with Premier League invention and rising Ally Pally purses; exhibitions still padded totals, but televised prize money finally looked like a proper sport's ledger.
MvG & Premier League nights 2013–2021
Michael van Gerwen's dominance and sold-out arena nights pushed single-season prize hauls past £1m.
Premier League, Europeans and Worlds stacked enough televised events that a Dutch world No. 1 could clear seven figures from prize money alone before exhibitions. Gerwyn Price and Fallon Sherrock's crossover fame showed personality still multiplied the ceiling.
Littler youth boom 2022–present
A teenage Ally Pally run detonated darts' commercial ceiling overnight.
Luke Littler's 2024 World Championship charge turned a Warrington teenager into a global marketing object. Streaming clips, bookmaker deals and youth-market sponsors piled onto PDC prize money in a way no previous generation had accessed at that age.
