Does this atlas rank groups by IQ, race or nation?
No. Pathways and evidence stay individual. Scores are browsing aids — never group biological or racial ranks.
Is flow the same as deliberate practice?
No. Ericsson’s practice is often effortful and slightly aversive. Flow is typically reported as enjoyable. They can overlap; they are not synonyms.
How was it measured?
Early interviews, then ESM: people are signalled at random and note challenge, skill and affect. Later work uses questionnaires and some physiology.
Does flow cause excellence?
It correlates with engagement. Causal stories are harder. Some high performers report little flow in the ugly hours that built the skill.
Can classrooms manufacture flow?
They can tune challenge and reduce distraction. They cannot guarantee a private phenomenological state on a timetable.
What is the boredom/anxiety map?
When skill exceeds challenge, boredom; when challenge exceeds skill, anxiety. Flow sits on the high–high diagonal in the classic figure.
