Major honours
A run-down space above a drugstore, but the center of boxing in the 1950s and 1960s. Promoter Chris Dundee opened it in 1950 with his brother Angelo Dundee handling the training. When Cassius Clay, fresh off gold at the 1960 Rome Olympics, turned pro and set up shop here, Fifth Street became boxing's world address, and the 1964 upset of Sonny Liston was prepared inside these walls. Angelo Dundee trained 15 world champions out of this gym, including Willie Pastrano, Luis Rodriguez and Sugar Ramos, and later guided the comebacks of Sugar Ray Leonard and George Foreman. Dundee's method was never to rebuild a fighter's style but to win fights through corner judgment and psychology. The building closed in 1993, and a gym of the same name reopened nearby in 2010.

Rivalry
Fifth Street's rival was New York's Stillman's Gym. The shift of boxing's center of gravity from New York to Miami and Las Vegas is itself summed up in the rise and fall of these two gyms.
