Major honours
Founded by Oscar De La Hoya while he was still an active fighter in 2002, this is a rare case of a boxer becoming his own promoter. In 2007 he engineered his own fight against Floyd Mayweather, drawing roughly 2.48 million PPV buys, then the highest total ever, and that single fight confirmed the PPV-driven economic model as the standard for boxing. Golden Boy went on to target the Latino market inside the United States, building Canelo Alvarez into a star from his teenage years, and Bernard Hopkins joined as an equity partner, moving between the ring and the front office. The company also promoted the 2017 and 2018 rematches between Canelo and Gennadiy Golovkin. Since Canelo departed after a contract dispute in 2020, Golden Boy has pushed a generational transition led by Ryan Garcia and Jaime Munguia.

Rivalry
The split between Golden Boy and the Mayweather promotion was a central event in 2010s boxing politics. With the two companies divided, the best welterweight matchups were blocked for years, and since Canelo's move, competing contract offers from Matchroom and PBC have followed.
