Greg Jackson opened a submission-fighting gym in Albuquerque in 1992, and when it merged with kickboxing coach Mike Winkeljohn's gym in 2007, it became one of the sport's most influential strategy labs. Albuquerque's high-altitude training environment, at roughly 1,600 meters, combined with Jackson's signature approach to game-planning — breaking down an opponent's tendencies and scripting round-by-round counters — turned the city into a pilgrimage site for champions for a stretch of years. In 2011, Jon Jones became the youngest UFC champion in history here and defended the light heavyweight title for four years; Rashad Evans had held the same belt before him. In 2015, former boxing world champion Holly Holm produced one of the sport's biggest upsets by knocking out Ronda Rousey with a head kick, and Carlos Condit brought home WEC and interim UFC welterweight titles. Georges St-Pierre also kept Jackson as his game-plan architect throughout his prime.

Rivalry
After former gym-mates Jon Jones and Rashad Evans split and fought at UFC 145 in 2012, the event became a textbook case of MMA team politics, and the subsequent long-running feud between Jones and AKA's Daniel Cormier extended the rivalry between the two camps for years.
