Urijah Faber built Team Alpha Male in Sacramento in 2004, a camp that made its name entirely on lighter weight classes at a time when they didn't draw. A cluster of former college wrestlers built a distinctive style around fast-paced scrambles and guillotine chokes, and Faber himself held the WEC featherweight belt from 2006 to 2008, proving that a small, fast weight class could sell in the United States. After WEC folded into the UFC, TJ Dillashaw became bantamweight champion in 2014 and Cody Garbrandt took the same belt in 2016. Chad Mendes and Joseph Benavidez each held long-running top contender status at featherweight and flyweight, respectively. Dillashaw's 2015 departure from the team triggered the most publicly aired split in American MMA, and the resulting feud with Garbrandt followed.

Rivalry

The rivalry with Nova Uniao defined the team's identity. Faber lost to Aldo, Dillashaw and Faber both lost to Renan Barao, and on top of that came the internal rivalry between Dillashaw and his former teammate Garbrandt after Dillashaw's departure.
