Major honours
Montreal's Tristar Gym earned its name through method rather than size. Head coach Firas Zahabi, who studied philosophy, is known for an approach built on repeatable technical drilling and conditioning management rather than overload sparring, and the most complete proof of that method was Georges St-Pierre. From 2008 to 2013, St-Pierre defended the welterweight belt nine consecutive times without ever losing it, changing the sport's very standard for fight preparation by bringing an entirely different game plan for every opponent, and after a four-year hiatus he returned in 2017 to capture the middleweight title as well. Rory MacDonald grew into a top welterweight contender at the same gym, and Olivier Aubin-Mercier won the 2022 PFL lightweight season and its million-dollar prize. The practice of top fighters flying into Montreal purely for camp, including Kenny Florian among others, also took root here.

Rivalry
St-Pierre's two fights against AKA's Josh Koscheck, along with their public sniping as opposing coaches on a reality series, made Montreal and San Jose symbolic opposites, and losing the belt to Matt Serra in 2007 left a lasting grudge with New York's Serra Longo.
