Jiu-jitsu practitioner Matt Serra and striking coach Ray Longo teamed up on Long Island in the mid-2000s to build Serra Longo Fight Team, the center of New York MMA and a camp that has produced an unusual number of major upsets. Serra himself started it off by finishing Georges St-Pierre in the first round at UFC 69 in 2007 to become welterweight champion. In 2013, Chris Weidman knocked out Anderson Silva at UFC 162 to end a middleweight reign that had run 2,457 days, then beat him again in the rematch to defend the title. In 2021, Aljamain Sterling became bantamweight champion and defended it three times, and Georgia-born Merab Dvalishvili took over the same belt in 2024, making this gym one that has dominated a single division in succession. Training that fuses Longo's striking instruction with Serra's ground system emphasizes in-house development over signing outside stars.

Rivalry

The sniping between Serra and St-Pierre after Serra's 2007 upset, and their rematch the following year, pitted Long Island against Montreal, and Weidman ending Anderson Silva's dynasty put this team on the opposite side of Brazil's established order.
